Driving Stick Shift with a Bionic Hand

Driving Stick Shift with a Bionic Hand

Mike has done a lot of things people never thought he would.

Just by being alive today he has defied the doctor who had told him to, “Say goodbye to your family because you probably won’t last through the night”.

Mike knows that a fulfilling life is not defined by what you are, but by who you are. It is determined by the way you think about yourself; Whether you feel trapped or free.

Many in his situation may have stopped life completely. They may have listened to the doctor who told them they would die and that would have been the end of it.

But Mike is not that sort of person. He has made his life worth living a thousand times over. With two prosthetic legs, he has learned to walk wherever he wants, even up and down ramps. He can drive a stick shift vehicle, mow the lawn, and chase around his grand kids.

Mike’s road to physical autonomy was helped largely in part by Cornerstone Prosthetics and Orthotics. They have been with Mike since the beginning to help him transition and thrive in life as an amputee. Their relationship together is a strong one as you will hear in the video. It is people like this, and these types positive relationships between businesses and people, that inspire us to tell the stories that we do. Please watch below.

Technical Details of the Shoot:

  • Location: Mike’s house near Everett.
  • Weather conditions: Partly cloudy to sunny.
  • Gear:
    • For the interview portion, we used two Sony a7s cameras, a lavaliere microphone, and lights.
    • For the B-roll shots, we used a Pilot Fly H2 gimbal to stabilize
  • Edited using Adobe Premiere Pro
Randy Gets His Life Back

Randy Gets His Life Back

It’s a very surreal, interesting, and comforting experience doing video work in the prosthetics industry.

Those are a few adjectives you may not have expected to hear, but the truth is, the people we have met through Cornerstone Prosthetics and Orthotics are some of the most positive and uplifting we have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Randy is a below the knee amputee. He is also a long distance runner, mountain biker, Boy Scout troop leader, and bee keeper.

We first met Randy at the starting line of a 5k race he was about to compete in. There were no tell tale signs of someone who had lost half of his leg, besides the obvious hardware. He greeted us with a smile and then proceeded to continue his warm up without a hitch or hesitation. He wasn’t nervous. He wasn’t scared. He was focused. He was beaming. Ready to run and compete as he has time and time again.

Upon meeting Randy you will know what kind of person he is. Someone who loves what life has to offer. Someone who lives his to the fullest capacity. And in doing so that day, Randy allowed us to live ours to the fullest with him. To give our best effort to tell his story. To do whatever we could to bring others his message of confidence, capability, and zeal for life. To show those who need it, an example of a man who cannot be stopped, and the tools he uses to do what he loves.

We are very thankful and proud to be able to befriend people like Randy. And we are very thankful and proud that we as a company make it our priority to spread the message of truly great organizations like Cornerstone. We believe that we have the ultimate power through our videos to help others like them reach those who need it the most.

If you or someone you know wants to offer their products or services through video in this way, please contact us. For now, see Randy’s story for yourself. I think it will leave you invigorated and proud.

Thanks.
